Indian Summer

Hawks fly with airplanes

circling for a landing

Hot flashes through crinkly leaves

cool sheets

black mornings

luminous travelers glisten on the butterfly bush

lit with flashing hummingbirds

The nighttime roar of the highway

cold pavement

mums striving to bloom in the old garden

amid the remnants of tomato plants
